Gender, no bender for Kauky

All her life, Makgaokana Francinah Kauky Mabaso has always been one known to challenge the 'mould' and the status quo as to what people think women are capable of.

POLOKWANE – Kauky is a dynamic 24-year-old from Seshego who is without a doubt, proving that a woman can do just as well as a man when it comes to careers normally classed as a man’s job.

“I was born and bred in a village called Mokopane Tshamahansi. I studied engineering and related design at Capricorn College for Tvet and after my studies, I had an apprenticeship at Bakoni Platinum Mine where I qualified to become a boilermaker artisan. My passion for studying to become a boilermaker stems from my passion for the mining industry and my love for creating something from scratch. I am naturally competitive, even towards my male counterparts, just to prove women can do jobs which society would deem as fit for men,” she said.

Kauky is also an artist manager and business owner of Petkay Trading Enterprise.

“I decided on the name by combining my husband’s name, Peter (Pet), and my nickname, Khauky (Kay). My nickname is a shorter version of my first name and was given to me by my mother who initially wanted to give me the Tsonga name, Makhaukani. I registered my company this year in early August.”

What she loves most about her career as an artist manager is that it challenges and equips her with vast amounts of knowledge on a daily basis. “Gaining knowledge is empowering towards young women like myself who want to pursue careers in a generally male-dominated field. I am astounded that people are still stereotypical about professions and which gender should do what career-wise.”

As an artist manager she is determined to keep fighting for upcoming artists and to get them recognised.

“I believe in taking risks and empowering others, especially women. The entertainment industry is a tough one. First and foremost you need to know what the target market is for a specific artist in order to keep up and help them stay relevant. As a manager and artist you have to move with the trends and times and you should both be willing to learn new things which will boost the brand or artist. My advice is to never shy away from a challenge and to remain positive. Always strive to learn new things so you can be the best in your respective craft or career.”
