POLOKWANE – The death of Gladys Ramahuta on 7 November has left a void in the lives of many people.

Gladys was born into the Moloto family as one of the princesses of the Moloto Chieftainship, but she was not only royalty in name but through her deeds as well.

She pursued a career in teaching and married the late Ronald Mabapa Ramahuta, also a teacher, in 1954. Together they built an enterprise in Chebeng village, Moletjie – a general dealer, eating house, bottle store and bar lounge.

She received numerous accolades among which the Tracy Malatjie Business Woman Award, a community builder recognition from Thobela FM and The Order of Baobab in Bronze, awarded to her by President Jacob Zuma for being a community builder of note. She was also a nominee for the Basadi Awards.

Gladys was a humanitarian who created jobs and enabled families to put food on the table. She was known for being a true embodiment of the spirit of ubuntu and an example of localised rural development and social cohesion.
