Members of Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) Limpopo, a movement representing users of the public health care system, picketed at the Department of Health offices on issues related to the province’s dilapidated health system earlier today (Thursday).
TAC Limpopo Chairperson Helen Nkuna handed a memorandum to Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba stressing issues within the health system violating the constitutional rights of people. “Every day we hear reports of collapse, pain, indignity, loss, shock and grief. We have received numerous complaints and reports of system failure which has dire consequences for patients. Our own monitoring in recent months at facilities across the Mopani and Vhembe districts confirm the extent of this crisis,” Nkuna said.
She indicated that, among others, facilities are overcrowded with too few doctors and nurses available, inferior filing systems, long waiting hours and shortage of medicines.
“We had enough of these daily indignities. We will hold the MEC, Premier Stan Mathabatha and the Department of Health accountable for their indifferences to the suffering of poor people, for their foot-dragging and empty promises,” Nkuna said.
Ramathuba addressed the crowd saying that she will respond personally to all demands highlighted in the memorandum.
