Grow your ‘stache for Movember

Today marks the beginning of Movember, an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

POLOKWANE – Men across the globe are encouraged to grow their moustaches to raise awareness as men are facing health crises that aren’t being talked about.

Movember started in 2003 with a group of 30 men in Melbourne, who decided to grow moustaches for a bit of a giggle.

The next year, 450 men took part and they raised around R411 252 for prostate cancer research.

The trend quickly grew into a global phenomenon and is now a major annual event. Now, around five million people, who are dubbed Mo Bros and Mo Sistas, take part in at least 21 countries.

The Movember Foundation charity raises awareness and money for the biggest health issues in men’s lives namely prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and also mental health and suicide prevention.

The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) places the focus on the ‘Big Five’ cancers affecting South African men during its Men’s Health Awareness Campaign in November. These are prostate, colorectal, Kaposi sarcoma (a type of skin cancer), lung and bladder cancer. It’s vital that men be pro-active, stepping up and taking responsibility for their health all year round.

You can participate by signing up on the official Movember South Africa site.

Start clean shaven, grow throughout the month, and get some serious funds behind the men who need it most.
