Sabric helps you to be vigilant of bank crimes

Sabric Media Communications Liaison Manager, Louise Tordiffe, said educational campaigns were prompted by the increase in cases lodged by people who have been robbed of their hard-earned money.

TO HELP keep people informed about banking-related crimes the South African Police and the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) are hosting educational campaigns.

Sabric Media Communications Liaison Manager, Louise Tordiffe, said these campaigns were prompted by the increase in cases lodged by people who have been robbed of their hard-earned money.

“The campaign aims to make people aware of banking crimes such as card cloning, counterfeit cards, job scams, fraud and corruption.

“We also aim to teach the community how to carry their cash safely, especially large amounts of money,” she explained.

Tips to keep your money safe:

• Be extra vigilant when perform a banking transaction.

• Do not allow anyone to help you, unless the person offering help is a qualified banking assistant.

• Always choose an ATM that is well built and in a safe environment.

• If you feel unsafe to go and make a transaction alone, ask someone you know and trust to accompany you.

• If you fall victim to a banking-related crime such as card skimming or cloning, notify the police immediately.

• Never let anyone distract you while you perform a banking transaction.

• Never force your card into the ATM, rather go into the bank and explain your situation so banking tellers and assistants will be able to help you.

• Always shield the keypad when you punch in your secret pin code to avoid someone seeing it.
