Filthy toilets a ‘health risk’ for college students

Vhembe TVET College students have stated that the toilets have not been cleaned for months, leaving them in an unusable condition.

LIMPOPO – Vhembe TVET College students are fed-up about the filthy ablution facilities at the Makwarela campus, outside Sibasa.

“I fail to understand how toilets of a big institution as this can be in this condition. It’s like the management does not care as they have their own fancy toilets in their offices, but it’s us the students who suffer. The toilets have no water to flush, some of them are broken and the smell is unbearable,” said Shumani Mavhungu, a student at the campus.

Some of the students blame a shortage of water at the campus as most of the toilets are left unflushed, which has created an unbearable stench across campus.

“These toilets put our health at risk. One cannot even walk past them without covering their mouth and nose due to the stench,” added Vhutshilo Ramanala, another student at the campus.

“No one ever enter those toilets because even if you decide to use the broken ones you will find them without water and any normal human being cannot bear to see what’s inside there,” added Ramanala.

“Something needs to be done fast to fix and clean these toilets as we cannot continue paying school fees yet they fail to hire people to keep our toilets clean and safe. It is so frustrating,” he bemoaned.

Makwarela township is one of the areas within the Vhembe district which still faces challenges of water supply.

All attempts to get comment from the campus management failed.
