Training, the NMG way

The editorial team at Northern Media Group took part in an interesting training session on Thursday.

POLOKWANE – The moment you hear the word ‘training’, you think about a lecturer and taking notes. Little did the Editorial team of Northern Media Group think that their training on Thursday, would involve puzzle building and problem solving.

Arriving at the boardroom, the team were greeted by Joline Nash (Group editor) and Hilda Pretorius (Deputy editor), who took their phones and gave each person a name.

Each team member was given a name and had to find their partner by asking yes or no questions.

By asking only “yes” and “no” questions, the team players had to find their team mate. As soon as everyone had their team mate, the next game was introduced and from there on, it was a lot of laughing and fun.

Anne Molope (Journalist) takes instructions from her team mate to draw a picture she wasn’t able to see.

The team learnt to work together to achieve goals and that communication is important.

As Riana Joubert, a journalist, says “It was nice to see how important it is to get someone else’s input and how you feel if you do not get it. It is also important to give your input.”

For Thabitha Mahlangu, a journalist, it was fun and motivating and she explains that it helps her to get rid of her shyness.

“It gave me the opportunity to see how different people approach a problem in different ways. I also saw the importance of team building,” explains Elisna Nel, sub editor.

For new comer to the team, Penelope Shandlale it was a very interesting exercise. “The way in which we all walked in with little knowledge about one another and walked out of training knowing so much more and understanding one another better. The communication skills that we learnt through all the games we participated in, will now make it easier for us to work better as a team.  It was a very interactive session which personally made me feel as though I have been a part of the family for longer than 48 hours. I really wish we could have that every other week.”

The overall feeling was that it was fun and everyone loved the interactive method.
