Nifty crossover oozing of specs, affordability

The brand new Mahindra TUV300 proves that you can have your cake and eat it too!

MOKOPANE – In recent years, Mahindra & Mahindra upped their game by combining robust build, excellent standard specs and bargain pricing.

Under the bonnet

This new contender in the crossover segment features a turbocharged mHawk diesel 1.5 litre powerplant oozing 73kW at 3750 revs per minute. The engine performs well and is suitable for a vehicle this size. A five-speed manual gearbox mated to the above powerplant equal to strong in-gear acceleration. Joining modern tech, the TUV300 has the option of driving in eco mode.

The ride

The cushiony ride makes driving over potholes and on gravel nothing but comfortable. The suspension hardly picks up any road indecencies, making it a perfect commuter for South Africa’s pothole-ridden roads. Seats are plump and body-hugging, resulting in an unstrained ride. The high seating rounds off the package – ground clearance is generous.

Inside the cabin

A refreshed take on creature comfort and refinement brought the TUV300 a polished cabin. All buttons are within safe reach of the driver and the tall gear adds to a great driving experience.

The steering wheel not only looks good, but also offers favourable grip to the driver. The speedometer includes an informative onboard computer. Both speedometer and infotainment system offers a Distance to Empty reading.

The glossy infotainment features an auxiliary port, bluetooth connectivity and radio. Futhermore it ‘talks’, such as reminding passengers to wear their seatbelts (‘please wear your seatbelt for a safe drive’) and notifying the driver when fuel is almost depleted. On every new day the vehicle also greets by saying ‘welcome to your tough and stylish TUV300’.

Something noteworthy to Bosveld was when a mechanic stated that Mahindra develops much more refined cabins these days compared to their previous products.

This is a definite thumbs-up for the manufacturer and we hope they continue to impress.

The two seats in the rear of the vehicle come in very handy, especially when transporting children. The side-opening door adds to practicality.

Value for money

The TUV300 has all the bells and whistles needed in this segment. Some standard specifications include cornering lights, brake energy regeneration technology, rear parking sensors (showing the exact distance on the infotainment screen) and armrests for both driver and front passenger. Mahindra also has an app that can connect to the vehicle via cellphone called BLUESENSE. Bosveld is yet to test this, but reports look promising.

Economy

Fuel efficiency is claimed at 5,4 litres per 100km.

In conclusion

Mahindra offers a good package with its TUV300. Priced at R229 995, it leaves many competitors red in the face. It represents true value for money. This is a crossover for the shortlist.
