The vehicle in which Thabang Tladi and Kate Ramoshaba, both 19, drowned after it plunged into the Chuenespoort Dam on Sunday was retrieved by the Police Search and Rescue unit on Tuesday.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that an inquest into the incident had been registered.
Tladi and Ramoshaba were reportedly sitting in a Toyota Tazz parked next to the dam when the vehicle suddenly sped into the water. A man fishing from a boat summoned the Police after witnessing the incident, Ngoepe indicated.
He said the Police Search and Rescue Unit reacted swiftly and recovered the bodies but during the process to remove the vehicle the cable snapped and the vehicle went deeper into the water. The mission was abandoned until Tuesday and the vehicle then successfully recovered.
Both deceased are from Lebowakgomo and were students at Repeat Part Time Centre at Seleteng village in Ga-Mphahlele.
Ngoepe said the motive behind the incident is still being investigated.
