LIMPOPO – The police are on the trail of suspects who are individuals who are responsible for the incidents of public violence and malicious damage to property near Letsitele outside Tzaneen.

The incident in question occurred yesterday (Sunday) at around 14:00 when a group of residents marched to the homestead of Chief N’wamitwa demanding his presence, said Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

“The police were summoned to the scene and the crowd dispersed peacefully, however, after few hours the same group of people regrouped and again marched towards the chief’s homestead; this time they barricaded the road with burning tyres and other debris,” he explained.

On arrival at the chief’s homestead the angry group damaged the gate and smashed windows of two vehicles which were inside the premises, he added.

The police reacted by firing rubber bullets and the crowd once again dispersed and the situation was brought under control.

“We are however still investigating the information that one person might have been injured during the commotion,” Mojapelo confirmed.

The motive behind this violent protest is still unknown and public order police are in the area to monitor the situation.

We condemn any form of violent protest and those responsible will be pursued until they are caught. Police investigations continue.
