The smell was initially only present in the evenings but as of late it is present throughout the day as well. Concerned residents are up in arms about the air pollution being unsafe for them and their children as they say the air is polluted and they are at risk of contracting illnesses.

Following a request for comment on the matter, Polokwane Municipal Spokesperson, Disree Manyane told Review the municipal wastewater plant is currently being upgraded.

“The influent from domestic and industrial areas is partially treated which leads to the smell and sludge in the maturation process. Due to the construction at the inlet of the works, the primary settling tanks are blocked and there is a carry-over of sludge to the ponds which results in the foul smell. Unfortunately, the smell may continue until the upgrading works are complete. The municipality has engaged with the contractors, however, to speed up the process so the nearby communities can get relief from the smell. We therefore request patience from the residents and apologise for any inconvenience caused during the project implementation. Once the upgrades are done the plant will be improved and operate optimally to the benefit of all,” she said.
