Vodacom Limpopo Region, in the continued spirit of giving and making every day a Mandela Day, handed over three converted Vodacom containers to the Ntelele Day Care Centre in Blood River outside Seshego on Friday. The containers have been transformed into a kitchen and a library.
The centre focuses on early childhood development and also caters for vulnerable children from the ages of one month to six years. The centre also empowers learners by providing a shelter and a safe environment in the community of Seshego. It caters for children who comes from underprivileged backgrounds and provides support to children that need assistance with their homework.
The initiative forms part of the Vodacom Foundation’s non-profit organisation (NPO) partnership programmes which provided funding to support the refurbishment.
Vodacom and their partners Gift of the Givers and MM Telecoms, assisted the centre by drilling a borehole and providing a JoJo tank, plastering, painting and laying new floor tiles for the existing building, sealing roof leakages as well as donating two jungle gyms and 50 mattresses.
Speaking at the handover Chris Lazarus, Managing Executive for Vodacom Limpopo Region said: “We give thanks to Madiba for his life, his leadership, his devotion to humanity and humanitarian causes. We salute and thank him for his sacrifices for our freedom and our future.”
“Ubuntu is one of the values that we embrace at Vodacom and, as such, the genesis of Vodacom’s spirit to give beyond Mandela Day is because the Vodacom Foundation’s work stems from Mandela’s passing on the torch of public service, saying it is in your hands to make a difference.”
Lazarus said that Vodacom is committed to inspire its employees to make everyday a Mandela Day and that Vodacom will continue to work with needy communities to ensure that the legacy of Madiba continues.
Violet Malotane, Founder of Ntetele Day Care said they were grateful for having being chosen by Vodacom and promised to look after all the donated items. “We are grateful for their support. Their love for the community has touched the lives of the learners attending the centre. Most of the children were sleeping on the floor and now we have the new mattresses,” Malotane said.
