From the ‘ghetto’ to greatness

Despite having been deemed as being unruly, learners from Westenburg Secondary School have made it their mission to change preconceptions about them, their school and eventually the community at large.

POLOKWANE – The Westenburg suburb is notorious for being a hub of criminal activity and miscreants but this year the learners at Westenburg Secondary School are determined to begin changing this. During a recent motivational talk at the school the school’s leadership decided to start small by improving themselves and their results, in turn motivating their peers to do the same.

The motivational talk was combined with a career expo to give the learners insight to career prospects available to them when they further their studies at tertiary institutions.

Isabella Makhura (LRC President).

Isabella Makhura, President of the Learner Representative Council (LRC), said the motivational talk has left them more determined to prove others wrong about their misconceptions of them and their community.

“I am determined to pass Gr 12 with flying colours as I know the hard work I put in now will help to pave the way to a bright future for me. I hope to encourage my peers by setting an example of how hard work pays off so we can all grow into the responsible leaders of tomorrow I know we are,” she said.

The motivational talk at the school was delivered by Kgadi “The Possibilitarian” Mmanakana  who said change is possible and necessary for growth.

Deunerian Mohamed (Gr 12).

One of the learners, Deunerian Mohamed, said Kgadi The Possibilitarian’s talk has left him feeling positive and motivated about making a success of himself.

“I am now even more determined to make a success of myself, irrespective of what people might think about me, where I come from and what I have been through. She has made it clear we can become anything we dream of through hard work and told us there is help out there in the world if you need it, all you have to do is ask,” he said.
