Discovering the natural beauty and appeal of Limpopo

Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) board Chairperson, Andrew Dipela, emphasised that tourism is everyone's business and encouraged everyone to tour the various attractions available in the Limpopo province.

LIMPOPO – “Touring our province should start with us to ensure that we better our tourism sector and make it appealing.”

In wrapping up the media tourism month launch held in Hoedspruit last week, the Mopani district at large played a huge role in entertaining media personnel from Limpopo and Gauteng with a variety of tourist attractions.

The two-day media tour saw journalists from different media houses exploring some of the tourist attractions in various parts of the district.

Magoebaskloof Canopy Tour, Zwakala Brewery, Letaba River Gorge and Bakone Malapa Open Air Museum in Polokwane are some of the sites that were explored during the tour.

Zwakala, which means ‘come closer’, is an award winning local craft beer from Limpopo.

The Magoebaskloof Canopy Tour is one of the attractions which can take one on a journey into a previously inaccessible realm of nature, as you traverse the upper level of the indigenous forest and ancient mountain cliffs, overlooking the spectacular Groot Letaba River Gorge.

The Letaba River gorge is home to a wide variety of plant, animal and bird life. The assortment of colourful wild flowers and orchids draping the surrounding cliffs are sure to catch your attention.

Driving to Essex in Hoedspruit, one can also spend time interacting with the Jessica, the world-famous hippo.

What makes Jessica so special and unique is the fact that she’s a wild animal that interacts with humans in a rather different way than nature has intended. Although it is believed that hippos are some of the most dangerous and fearsome creatures in Africa where there have been several accounts of hippos attacking (and killing) people who invade their space or disrupt their routines, Jessica is different; she loves interacting with human beings.

Moving along the south of Polokwane, one can also experience the sheer beauty and history of Bakone Malapa Open Air Museum, which is regarded as a living museum.

This is a reconstructed village in the style used by Northern Sotho speaking people about 250 years ago, designed to demonstrate the daily life of Bakone, a highly sophisticated subgroup of the Northen Sotho tribe. The cultural village includes two homesteads that display fire making, maize grinding and beer brewing as was done years ago.
