Eight arrested suspects ‘positively linked’ to Van Zyl’s murder

According to Heritage Protection Group (HPG) Director, Steven Vermaak they enabled task teams to Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

LIMPOPO –  After massive intelligence-driven in the Lowveld’s rural areas six suspects were arrested in Hazyview over the weekend and a seventh in Mookgophong. HPG arrested the eight suspect on Tuesday morning in Lenasia.  “All eight suspects have been positively linked to the brutal murder of Piet and Tilla van Zyl,” confirmed Vermaak.

The police earlier offered a R50 000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspects and the Van Zyl family added another R50 000 to make the total reward offered R100 000.

According to Albert Gryvenstein from Bossie’s Community Justice an informant came forward with crucial information that led the task team members to their first suspect in Hazyview, reported Lowvelder.

The group consisted of private sector crime-fighters and BCJ. They divided into 14 vehicles. A police official was allocated to each vehicle. They travelled towards a house close to Hazyview that was identified as belonging to one of the suspects. “We spotted a vehicle leaving the premises. The driver of the vehicle was stopped and his house searched,” Gryvenstein said.

The members searched his house and a large amount of cash as well as reported stolen items were recovered. Information provided by this suspect led to the arrest of further suspects in the matter, Gryvenstein explained.

Six of them have been connected to rhino poaching. Among the items found in their possession were two knives with a suspicious substance on it that will be tested for rhino DNA.”

LIMPOPO – Vermaak has been working side by side with the police in this investigation and had the following to say to Bosveld in an exclusive interview.

Vermaak said: “I cannot give any further information except that there were six suspects arrested last night and that the investigation continues.” Vermaak expressed his disappointment about the information that leaked out, as it may make the investigation process difficult. Vermaak request the public not to post or share any false or unauthorised information on social media. “This can have a major setback in a case.” Vermaak concluded.
