Muni to audit prepaid power meters

The Polokwane Municipality has started on 7 August , with a process to audit all electricity meters in the city.

POLOKWANE – The audit will span a period of 12 months and include the entire municipality.

The purpose is to collect information about customers, their addresses, contact details as well as the state of their meters on the premises.

The information will assist the municipality to ensure data on their data basis is accurate and to take corrective steps to rectify any meters that are faulty and installations that are non-compliant. There are an estimated 7 000 faulty meters within the municipality.

The municipality’s electricity department has to assist a host of consumers every month to enter their pre-paid electricity at meters outside the yard as consumers with faulty meters cannot enter their codes in their meters inside their homes, impacting on normal service delivery and overtime payments of the department.

The process will also assist in rooting out illegal connections in the city.

The audit will focus on names, contact details, addresses and GPS coordinates of customers and serial numbers of meters, meter readings, size of the circuit breakers, condition of the installation and location of the meter. All personnel involved in the audit will carry identity cards with a City of Polokwane logo.
