The South African Local Government Association (Salga) Limpopo prides itself on the strides it has made in empowering women.
In a media release, Thipa Selala, Salga Limpopo Spokesperson, conveyed the association’s best wishes to all women in Limpopo and beyond as they commemorated National Women’s Day last Wednesday.
“In commemorating Women’s Month in August, Salga Limpopo wishes to emphasise achievements made towards the effective participation of women in the public sector who are in decision-making positions,” the statement reads. It further mentions that South Africa’s theme for the 2017 August month is: ‘The Year of OR Tambo: Women United in Moving South Africa Forward’ which emphasises unity of purpose among women and their vital role as agents of development.
“As we commemorate the historic struggles and sacrifices of South African women, Salga Limpopo condemns acts of homicide and violence against women and children. Salga Limpopo believes that our freedom is not complete until women are free from all forms of crimes against them. Salga Limpopo urges all citizens to reaffirm the role that women play in advancing society towards moving South Africa forward.”
According to Salga Limpopo, women make up over half of the population of South Africa. As a result, the role of local government in championing and mainstreaming gender in its day-to-day functions, cannot be over-emphasised. “As Salga Limpopo, we are proud to announce that 52% of mayors and speakers in Limpopo municipalities is made up of women while women who serve in Salga Limpopo Provincial Executive Committee make up 50%. We live in a country that has some of the most progressive policies that are aimed at advancing women empowerment and gender equality,” Selala said.
“To all the awesome women of Salga and Limpopo Province, the inspiring leaders, dedicated mothers, adorable wives, loving daughters and supportive sisters, we say Happy Women’s Month and we wish you a Women’s Day celebration that is as amazing as you are,” the statement concluded.
