Limpopo police pounce on illegal gamblers

The suspects were arrested following a tip-off by the community regarding a casino operating illegally in the town's Main Street.

LIMPOPO – Marble Hall police arrested at least 16 suspects aged between 22 and 56 for illegal gambling in Marble Hall.

According to police, the suspects were arrested following a tip-off by the community regarding a casino operating illegally in the town’s Main Street.

Marble Hall police spokesperson, Constable Lethunya Mmuroa, said an investigation was conducted and information about the illegal casino’s operation was confirmed.

Mmuroa said a search warrant was applied for on 31 July and an operation was conducted between the police and members of the Limpopo Gambling Board.

“When the place was visited, people were found gambling on gambling machines. They were arrested immediately,” explained Mmuroa.

Police said among the suspects were two workers who were charged with contravention of Section 77(1)(b) of Limpopo Province Gambling Act 4 of 1996.

Mmuroa further said the suspects appeared before the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on 01 August and were granted R500 bail each.

Their matter was postponed to 25 August for further police investigation.

“The other suspects who were found gambling were charged and warned to appear in court while others paid admission of guilt fines.

“Police confiscated an undisclosed amount of cash, a drop safe and 36 computers,” explained Mmuroa.

The police’s investigations are ongoing at this time.
