Operation Gijima to help curb Lim crime

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba launched Operation Gijima in Polokwane last Friday to counter the seemingly rampant cash-in-transit heists and other robberies in Limpopo.

POLOKWANE – Nneke said the majority of these robberies were thwarted by the police with some of the culprits arrested. The aim of Operation Gijima is to strengthen the hand of the police service when dealing with these types of crimes.

Operation Gijima will be implemented with immediate effect and will involve members of the tactical response unit, the dog unit, the mounted police, public order policing unit and the air wing who will police all routes, shopping malls and other places of interest.

“Criminals will not come to this province and think they will return safely after committing crimes. We will work hand-in-hand with colleagues from other provinces to ensure there are no escape routes,” Nneke said.

“A special dedicated team resorting under Maj Genl Bafana Linda has been established to investigate all these cases as and when they occur.

Colleagues from the security industry will also play a critical role in our quest to rid the province from cash heists. The collaboration will be sustained for a long period of time and will make life difficult for all those contemplating to commit crimes.”

Stakeholders in private security companies and cash-in-transit firms attend the launch of Operation Gijima.

Nneke also called upon citizens to be part of the briefing through the Community Policing board and said the success of the operation will depend on the cooperation among all involved and reiterated that those involved in cash-in-transit-heists will face the full might of the law.

“This province will not be a playground for criminals,” he concluded.
