A blood drive held at Savannah Mall, the SANBS Polokwane mobile clinic managed to harvest a total of 33 units of blood out of a set target of 41 last Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The national blood supply levels remain at 3 days’ supply with blood groups A-, B-, AB+ and O+ reserves at a solid 70% of capacity and A+, B+, AB- and O- reserves at 60% capacity according to Dottie Pinn, SANBS Limpopo Public Relations Practitioner.
On Saturday morning Bossie van Rensburg, having donated for the 32nd time, said having lost family members due to blood loss following injury in vehicle accidents continues to motivate him. He said he hoped that by constantly donating blood he helps others in similar circumstances.
Moloko Serumula, SANBS Polokwane Donor Care Officer, shared the passion she has for the
SANBS with Polokwane Observer. She has been working at the service in Polokwane since 2015 after a career as professional nurse at a local hospital. Her current job entails interviewing donors before they are allowed to donate to see if they qualify. That can be determined by asking them questions about their lifestyle and doing preliminary blood pressure and haemoglobin level tests, she said.
What she loves most about her current job is working with people who willingly come to donate blood and all the different individuals she meets everyday.
