Focusing on geo-politics one frame at a time

Content researcher, Neo Mashiangwako (23) from Kgopeng says he plans to use television to bring prevailing geo-politics to the fore.

POLOKWANE – “My ultimate goals are to become a well-rounded researcher and creative writer, as well as a well-equipped intellectual capable of being a creative educator. I have come to realise film and television, as a platform of societal discourse, has the potential and capacity to go beyond the four walls of the cinema, as they provide a pivotal vantage point of the socio-political landscape of a society,” he says.

The youngster adds he plans to produce content which aims to break boundaries and compress spatial distance in South Africa through television as a medium since we live in a digital age.

He explains he aims to blur the spatial violence created by the Apartheid era.

“This very boundary has contributed greatly towards unpleasant tribalistic issues such as xenophobia, discrimination and stereotypes which are still prevalent in our communities. I hope the content I produce will contribute towards building the community, and appreciate the complexities and different identities that exist in our communities.”

Currently working for a media house as a content researcher intern, Neo advises the youth to always be themselves, work hard and remember that: “The world does not owe you anything but it has all that you need in order for you to become a success. We all have it in ourselves to achieve anything we put our minds to, we just need to focus and be determined enough”.

The youngster ended by saying one does not necessarily learn something from doing it themselves; we as individuals can learn a lot from one another through listening and engaging on various issues that affect us directly and indirectly.
