One suspect shot and killed during foiled ATM grinding in Lebowakgomo

Police intercepted the suspects en route and a shootout ensued

LIMPOPO – The provincial tracking team received a tip off in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 26 July, about a planned ATM grinding in a village outside Lebowakgomo.

The team reacted swiftly and evidently intercepted a trio crime syndicate.

Police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe says the suspects were pulled off the road, en route to Ga-Maja village, but were uncooperative and a shootout ensued.

Police returned fire and one suspect (29) was shot and killed. No policemen were harmed.

Ngoepe says four suspects were arrested and six others fled the scene in a VW polo.

The following items were recovered by police:

– One firearm

– A Toyota corolla

– A Police bulletproof vest

– Steel grinder wheels

– A Toyota Legend 45

– One Balaclava

– A Pistol holster, magazine pouch and pistol magazine with live rounds

The arrested suspects will appear before the Lebowakgomo Magistrates Court soon on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of police uniform.

“A manhunt has been launched for six suspects who fled the scene.
