Telling tales through art

44-year-old, Samuel Baloyi, is proof that second chances can change someone's life

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Art Museum has often provided a platform for young artists to showcase their art.

Baloyi, a resident of Kwena Moloto in Moletji,  stole the show at an art exhibition at the Polokwane Art Museum.

The 43-year-old is a former juvenile inmate who refuses to give up on life.

Baloyi’s work is collected widely across the province in mostly private art collections and he has participated in a number of art exhibitions, provincially and nationally. This exhibition was held to celebrate the never-say-die attitude among the youth who succeed under extreme conditions and circumstances.

The exhibition showcases some of the fine art produced by Baloyi over a period of time.

The works on display included drawings, paintings and sculptures made from cement, textiles, wood and paint.

Baloyi’s artwork is on sale and art lovers and collectors, and investors are encouraged to grab his artworks while they are still affordable because he is on a momentum of achievement.

This prolific full-time artist is also a tailor, a fashion designer and a barber. Baloyi, a man of few words said: “I started to paint at the age of eight, I think I was just talented when it comes to working with my hands.

“I decided not to be selfish but to share the fruit of my labour with art lovers and empty the inner me as I believe that everyone has a gift to give away. Bloom where you are planted and live your purpose.”

“We are delighted to be part of this exhibition, and we are very proud of Samuel Baloyi as one of our own. Since 2011 we have worked to make sure that the cultural offerings of our areas are not lost and that there is greater participation in these activities. We partnered with the Department of Arts to encourage young people to participate in and pursue art as a career, to eradicate the high unemployment rate,” said Polokwane Councillor, Josephine Maja.
