POLOKWANE – Review spoke to one of the organisers, Johnny Durant, about the plans for the Wheels Show that will take place on 29 July, at the Polokwane Showgrounds.
Durant is an oval racer from Polokwane Oval Raceway. He says since the absence of the Polokwane Show, he and others from various motor sport clubs, as well as the Bosveld Auto Club with their classic and vintage car collectors, are all part of the planning committee.
“The main aim of the Wheels Show is to organise an event where all types of motor sport in the city, and its region can come together. The event will be first and foremost a show, and not a racing event. There could be various motor sport vehicles in action, and on display, but it is primarily an exhibition show.”
Durant says he realised there was a void left after the demise of the annual Polokwane Show. He says with the input from various motor sport clubs and the Bosveld Auto Club, a committee was formed earlier this year with planning for the Wheel Show commencing in February.
“The Wheels Show will provide an opportunity for car and motor sport fanatics to closely view the different kinds of racing vehicles and motorbikes, as well as the opportunity to meet and talk to the different racers in person.”
Durant says the response and interest so far has been overwhelming. So much so, that the committee had to come up with more ideas on how to entertain the Wheels Show enthusiasts and their families on the day.
Durant and his fellow Wheel Show committee members decided to include some live entertainment for later in the day. The Afrikaans artists, Piet Pompies, and talented girl guitar band, Die Ventertjies will provide entertaining performances.
He emphasized that there will be ample food and drinks stalls on site during the event.
Gates will open from 10:00. From 14:00, however, the Wheels Show will start in all earnest. Entry fee for the event, including the live shows, cost R150 per person, and children under the age of 14 will enter for free.
The other motor sport clubs, in conjunction with Polokwane Oval Raceway, involved with the planning of the Wheels Show are:

• Capricorn Racing Club (for off-road bikes and quads)
• RAD Moto Polokwane
• Bosveld Auto Club.
Durant says the committee is liaising with various mainstream motor dealerships in Polokwane to exhibit their latest range of vehicles.
