New builder registration and enrollment certificates introduced by NHBRC
This is to limit fraud and keep up with evolving security technologies.
POLOKWANE – The National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) says the new security measures include an embedded watermark during paper manufacturing, a chemically sensitive paper, micro-printed text, background image printed with fine line security and control numbers done with an ink that cannot be rubbed off.
“We have enhanced the security features of the new certificates based on industry standards following a number of reported fraudulent activities that posed a risk to the warranty fund which needed to be managed effectively,” said NHBRC Business Services Executive, Thitinti Moshoeu.
The NHBRC is an agency of the Department of Human Settlements which is responsible for the protection of housing consumers and to regulate the home building industry.
NHBRC encourages homeowners, potential home buyers and financial institutions to familiarise themselves with these enhanced certificates and continue to exercise caution when dealing with contractors, developers and builders by ensuring they verify builder registration and home enrolment with the NHBRC.
“We have found there were houses, and other buildings, built which do not comply with the safety standards with the contractors who do this making use of false information and certificates. This is a dangerous practice that can lead to serious consequences, including people losing their lives,” Moshoeu added.
