Collins Chabane to be honoured at music festival

Malamulele businessman, King Chauke of Kingcha Media, will host an annual Collins Chabane music festival on 2 September at Malamulele Stadium.

LIMPOPO – According to Chauke, the festival will pay tribute to the life of the late minister and to thank him for his contribution as a musician.

“We won’t be like other organisers who take artists from Gauteng and other provinces to come and perform here in Limpopo. Instead we will have 98% of our local artists to showcase their talents in his honour,” said Chauke.

The annual festival was set to take place two years ago but was postponed to this year due to some challenges with logistics.

“We are so happy and believe that the event will be a success as we have informed the Chabane family and they gave us their blessing,” he said.

Matimba Chabane, son of the late minister, said he supports the festival in honour of his late father.

“As a family, we support this initiative since my father loved music,” he said. Among the artists set to perform is Zimbabwean group, The Movers, that the minister used to sing for as well as crowd puller and Xitsonga music Maestro, Benny Mayengani.

The late minister broke his teeth while playing the harmonica during his 10-year sentence in Robben Island.

In 2010, he received a Munghana Lonene FM lifetime achievement award and another award from South African Music Rights Organisation which sought to honour him and recognise his contribution to the South African music industry.

Chabane died in a collision on the N1 between Polokwane and Mokopane in March 2015.
