18-year-old arrested in Roossenekal for murdering his grandmother

The murder was part of a conspiracy to acquire the 79-year-old’s property valued in millions of rands.

LIMPOPO – Police in Roossenekal, outside Groblesdal, arrested the 18-year-old suspect for the brutal murder of his grandmother, which occurred in May 2017.

It is alleged, the deceased, Kgarebe Stephelina Masangu (79) was attacked and killed while sleeping in her house by unknown people who used a variety of objects.

Police were notified and upon their initial investigations from the crime scene, the suspects were alleged to be unknown by the family members.

However, according to Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the dedicated team of Detectives, who began their investigations immediately, in no time, cracked the case and uncovered evidence which connected the grandson and another family member following the disappearance of the two after the deceased’s funeral.

“Police preliminary investigations further uncovered that the motive behind this incident was a conspiracy to kill the deceased to acquire her property valued at millions of rands,” Ngoepe explained

A police manhunt continued since last month and the suspect was arrested while hiding in Mpumalanga.

“The remaining suspect, who is also a family member, is still being followed and her arrest is eminent as she has been identified,” Ngoepe said.

The suspect will appear before the Groblesdal Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 3 July, on a charge of murder and other possible additional charges.

Saps Provincial Commissioner, LT. General Nneke Ledwaba, has expressed his gratitude for what he says is a milestone achievement in cracking such a complicated matter within a short space of time.

The General has reassured the citizens of Limpopo on the quality investigative skills the SAPS has.

“Communities must refrain from killing each other for money or for any other benefit, as well as misleaading the police,” concluded General Ledwaba.
