Peet parades his Porsches
Most people retire and put their feet up, Peet van Zyl (74) however, put his foot to the floor in his posh Porsches.
POLOKWANE – Peet was born in Steynsrus in the Free State, where he attended primary and high school. He completed Gr 12 with three distinctions in 1961 and also captained the first rugby and athletics teams.
In 1962, he did his military training at the Naval Gymnasium in Simon’s Town in the Western Cape, and completed his candidate officer’s course during the same year. In 1963 and 1964 he attended the University of Pretoria and passed his Bachelor of Science course in the first year.
In 1964 he changed to medicine. Peet then obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree in 1970. He started specialising in diagnostic radiology at the University of Pretoria and H.F. Verwoerd Hospital in September 1973.
Peet later obtained a Master of Medicine degree in diagnostic radiology.
“This is when I started to follow an academic career at the University of Pretoria and H.F. Verwoerd Hospital and progressed to being a senior lecturer, which is also referred to as the first specialist,” Peet added.
He then went into private practice as a diagnostic radiologist in Polokwane and became a senior partner in September 1988. He has a 27-year-old daughter, Sanmari.
Peet collected and owned seven Porsches. In 1971 he bought his first Porsche, in 1992 his second, in 1993 his third, in 1996 his fourth and in 2008 his fifth.
In 2011 he bought his sixth Porsche and in 2015 he bought his seventh. Peet subsequently over the years sold five of the cars, keeping the two he bought in 2011 and 2015.
“I visited the Porsche factory in Germany in 2009 and also attended the 24-hour Le Mans in France last June.
His only regret?
“I wish I was younger so that I could drive at the same speed I used to drive my Porsches when I was a young boy,” he said, smilingly.
After selling five Porsches, Peet still owns a 911 Carrera 4S and a Cayenne S, as well as other cars he drives daily.
