Teens take Taxi to stay awake

A new drug, offering teens a way to stay awake while studying late, is doing the rounds in the city

POLOKWANE – Review spoke to learners in the city who say this new trend helps them stay awake longer and not be as tired when studying late.

Aside from using drugs such as khat and ecstasy for these purposes, they are also now using something as easy to come by as snuff, said Sanca Polokwane Director, Amanda van Staden.

She added the information about the new drug is still incomplete but they are in the process of learning more about it.

“What we know about the new trend so far is that learners place snuff under their tongues but it is believed the snuff may be mixed with something else,” she said. “This drug is called taxi.”

Van Staden said the problem with this drug is that snuff is not illegal and allowed in most schools which opens the door for people who want to sell drugs and learners who want to abuse a substance.

She urged schools to investigate when learners use something which looks like snuff to be sure it is not some other substance.

When it is suspected that learners may be involved, or are affected by, substance abuse, Van Staden urged parents and schools to contact Sanca immediately.

They can be contacted at (015) 295 3700, visit their offices at 33 Church Street or send an e-mail to amanda@fnda.co.za or riette@fnda.co.za.
