Taxila learners debate their way to the top

These learners took part in a debating competition at the Department of Water Affairs and Sanitation with the topic: Access to water and sanitation in some communities is severely limited due to socio-economic status.

POLOKWANE – Debating helps learners to do research into a variety of subjects and is a fun way to get them involved in extramural activities.

It helps them to prepare arguments and counterarguments, which in turns assists in developing self-confidence and independent thinking. With this in mind, the learners at Taxila Secondary School in Westenburg are paving their way to success through debate.

These learners took part in a debating competition at the Department of Water Affairs and Sanitation with the topic: Access to water and sanitation in some communities is severely limited due to socio-economic status. They took part in the debate on 20 June and obtained second place, receiving a trophy and certificates for their effort.

Taxila debate facilitator and English teacher, Nurse Monyebodi, said the learners’ involvement in debating enhances their overall knowledge about things happening around them and current affairs among other advantages.

“Debating teaches the learners to be good public speakers and writers while improving their research and listening skills. It also gives them the opportunity to grow intellectually and boosts their self-esteem,” she said.

The Taxila debate team is set to debate at cluster level at Flora Park Comprehensive High School soon. They also received the opportunity to participate in the United Nations Model Debate which is set to take place in August at Lebowakgomo Legislature.
