POLOKWANE – “This audit will provide assurance to the municipality on completeness of revenue and the possible actual cause for some of the distribution losses,” says Municipal Spokesperson, Disree Manyane.
Several readers received notices stating an official of the Polokwane Energy and Electricity Department has visited their address to inspect the electricity meter and main circuit breaker.
Manyane explained the reason for this was the municipality is experiencing between 7% and 10% losses on electricity per unit sold.
“We are currently implementing strategies to ensure reduction of these losses and collecting all revenue due. We draw the reports from the municipal electricity system which shows the prepaid purchase history and consumption per meter. This information is then analysed and follow-ups are done depending on the analysis,” she explained.
A site inspection is among the follow-up procedures. It has been found during some of these site inspections that some meters are bypassed (bridged) which prompted the municipality’s audit of the prepaid meters to ensure customers purchase the energy they are using.
“This process is supported by the Municipal Systems Act section on credit control which allows the municipality to develop various mechanisms on credit control,” Manyane added.
