Crowd opposes bail for Limpopo murder suspect

The angry women of Madombidzha village protested outside Louis Trichardt Magistrate's Court on Thursday demanding that the court refuse bail to a murder suspect.

LIMPOPO – On 19 April this year, the lifeless body of Jennifer Ntshivhangani (27) was discovered with a wound to her head, near Soekmansdal Police Station.

An investigation by the police led to the arrest of her boyfriend, who was last seen with the deceased two days before her body was discovered.

This incident angered local residents, who then vowed  to take the law into their own hands if the suspect was to be released on bail.

On Thursday, the angry residents who waved placards were adamant that the suspect should not be granted bail as they felt their safety as witnesses could not be guaranteed.

“We are here as a community to make it clear that murder suspects do not deserve to be released on bail on the grounds that they are a threat to the community.

“We won’t feel safe as a community when they are roaming the streets. We are also afraid that witnesses in the case will feel threatened and coerced into silence,” some of the villagers said.

The case has been postponed to 17 July for another bail application.
