New home for CANSA Mokopane
Cansa Mokopane has recently opened a Cansa House to support their patients in Mokopane.
MOKOPANE – The house warming of the house situated in 81 Geyser Street, was held last Friday Cancer volunteers and survivors came together to celebrate Cancer Survivors Day.
Ansa Smit, a volunteer at Cansa, said the word survivor might sound misleading. “Although you survived, you are still in a battle against this terrifying illness.”
Bobby Were, a breast cancer survivor share his struggle with the guests. “Even though cancer has put me through a rough time, I think it is the biggest blessing that God could have ever given me. It opened my eyes to see the funny side of life,” he said.
Were, who works with children with cancer in Polokwane, said he takes his hat of to caregivers, like his wife.
She is always there to help him while going through the same emotional stress.
A recent study published by medical journal Lancet predicts that South Africa could see an increase of 78% in the number of cancer cases by 2030.
The increase in the number of people diagnosed with cancer leads to an increased number of people living with cancer.
Cansa defines a ‘cancer survivor’ as any person who has been told that he/she has cancer and remains a cancer survivor until he/she dies of whatever cause.
