Head-banging heavy metal

Members of our local metal band, Days of Dissension, say the message, and not just the music, should be heard

POLOKWANE – Rogan Meyer and Douglas Gloak explain that they “are not satanists and only use the shock factor for effect”.

“If you judge on appearances, then you are what we sing about,” says Douglas, “If you do not understand the music, you will not like it.”

The word dissension means “a disagreement that leads to discord” and Douglas and Rogan say that one of the base themes of their music is freedom of the mind.

“Our music seems to be very aggressive but the message behind the music is to stop trying to be someone else and just be yourself.”

They started the band in 2014 but only recently decided to commit to it full-time and plan to release a CD at the end of this year.

“We have always worked on our music, but until now have stayed under the radar,” explains Rogan.

“Our music is meaningful. Nothing that we produce is without meaning,” says Douglas.

“Our music comes largely from our own personal experiences.

“We look back on our high school years and write from that experience.”

They both write the music, but Douglas is more involved with the lyrics and Rogan with producing.

“I have played in a few bands so with Rogan’s knowledge and my experience we make a mean team,” says Douglas.

They are influenced by all types of music including Justin Timberlake, Chris Chameleon, Metallica and ###Polisiekar.

They say that they listen to any kind of music, including kwaito, to gather inspiration.

As they are not a complete band they do not do live gigs yet but are headhunting people for their band.

“The technical level of playing drums for a metal band is very high so it is not easy to get someone to play for us,” says Rogan.
