Dendron farmer passes away

Deon Holtzhausen was hospitalised on 2 May in Polokwane where he was diagnosed with malaria.

POLOKWANE – Deon Holtzhausen passed away just over a month after being diagnosed with malaria.

According to message on a Facebook page that was created in an attempt to raise funds for Deon’s hospitalisation costs, he passed away on Sunday.

POLOKWANE – The family of Deon Holtzhausen, a subsistence farmer from Mogwadi (Dendron) had to collect money by borrowing from family members, selling of business assets and by using retirement savings in order to cover the costs of his hospitalisation.

He was hospitalised on 2 May in Polokwane where he was diagnosed with malaria. After two weeks in hospital his condition has not improved and a decision was taken to transfer him to a hospital in Pretoria. Since then his condition has improved.

Deon and his family run a small subsistence farming establishment and his illness and costs involved would seriously affect their ability to make a living. The intention is therefore to attempt to raise funds to settle any debt incurred, procure any assets lost and settle outstanding hospitalisation costs.

According to his brother Henk, he is still in the ICU of the Muelmed hospital in Pretoria and he is on a ventilator.

“The ventilator will be removed within the next few days, and if he is able to breathe on his own, he will be moved to a high care ward.”

Deon does not have a medical aid and the family had to rely on other means to pay his hospitalisation costs to date, such as borrowing money. “Should his condition keep improving, we anticipate that he will be discharged towards mid-June,” Henk said.

A Facebook page has been created in an attempt to raise funds for Deon.

The family’s attorneys will manage any donations made and ensure funds be directed through the correct channels. Their details are as follows:
Thomas Grobler Attorneys,
Trust account Absa
Account number 4041635828
Branch code 632005
Reference Deon Holtzhausen.

“Should you be making a donation, the family can only express their gratitude. A ‘Thank you’ cannot adequately express the appreciation for any possible donations, we are just grateful that he is improving and keep praying that he will pull through,” a family member said.
