Kick the Habit for one week with Sanca

Kick your Habit will get people and businesses in the city challenging each other to give something up that they may have made a habit of - Sanca

POLOKWANE – According to the South African National Council on alcoholism and drug dependency (Sanca), substance dependence statistics show that drug consumption, including cannabis cocaine and tik in South Africa, is twice the global average and second to none in Africa.

The average age of drug dependency in South Africa is 12 years and is decreasing alarmingly.

South Africans are among the top 10 narcotics- and alcohol abusers in the world, and for every 100 people, 15 have a drug problem and for every R100 in circulation, R25 and can be linked to a substance abuse problem.

The South African youth are especially vulnerable to the experimentation and long-term use of substances.

With all this in mind Sanca has urged residents to be aware and take hands with them during the month of June as it is Substance Abuse Awareness month. During the month there will also be a special week known as Kick your Habit that will get people and businesses in the city challenging each other to give something up that they may have made a habit of. This includes giving up the consumption of coffee, sugar and the known habits, such as smoking and drinking for one week. (Dates to be confirmed at a later stage)

Amanda van Staden, Sanca Representative, told Review that during June stickers can be bought from Sanca at R10 each.

“The Kick your Habit campaign is all about creating awareness around the difficulties involved in making a lifestyle change and making people aware of the different things that are not as commonly known to be dependencies,” she said.
