Giyani to have its own university

The Giyani College for Teaching, which has become a white elephant, could become a local university to many learners in Giyani and surrounding areas whose parents struggle to send them to faraway universities.

LIMPOPO – This is according to Malamulele Task Team Spokesperson, Dr Isaiah Ndhambi.

The Malamulele Task Team has been tasked by traditional leaders of the Tsongas to correct what they call the ‘injustice’ that came with the death of Professor Hudson Ntsanwisi, a former homeland leader of Matsonga-Machangani.

Ndhambi made this announcement during a recent two-day meeting where the community and traditional leaders discussed what they call a ‘dividing decision’ by President Jacob Zuma to allow some wards in Vuwani to be serviced in the Vhembe district.

He, along with his team, managed to meet the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, to discuss the reopening of the college as a university to reduce the cost to learners from Giyani and surrounds who want to further their education.

“We showed him the pictures of the building and asked that he reopen the college for our kids since we do not have any other university here that would cater for them,” explained Ndhambi saying the minister then agreed to set out a budget for the university but urged them to propose universities that would use the college as one of their branches.

“We met with the University of Limpopo and they inspected the college and reported their findings to the minister.”

Ndhambi said Nzimande told them everything was in order but said they had to bring a draft implementation plan which would be used to source funds from the treasury. This was successful, he added, and the draft was at an approval stage.
