Illegal miners nabbed, heavy equipment confiscated

Several illegal miners have been arrested and heavy equipment confiscated in an operation led by Limpopo police and the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR).

LIMPOPO – According to Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the high density operation was conducted in the Mecklenburg and Malipsdrift policing areas.

The five suspects, aged between 33 and 44-years-old, were cornered and arrested after police identified the two sites. During the arrest four Excavators and one Quon Truck were confiscated together with several of loads of unprocessed chrome, ready to be loaded, he added.

The arrested suspects will appear in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s court on charges related to the contravention of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Act and the National Environmental Maintenance  Act.

These type of operations, which is led by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner Linda, will be conducted on an ongoing basis until the said activities are completely eradicated.
