The concept of mega conservation and the province’s status in terms thereof was the focus of Limpopo Tourism Agency’s (LTA) marketing campaign during the 2017 Tourism Indaba that commenced in Durban on Tuesday.
The agency indicated that their strategy had been be to prominently position the concept of mega conservation supported by the rest of the province’s tourism clusters namely safari and hunting; golf and game; family and recreation; special interest and meetings, incentive travel, conferences and events.
The Tourism Indaba is the largest tourism trade marketing event on the African calendar and second only to the ITB Berlin and World Trade Market London events on the global calendar. It showcases the widest variety of Southern Africa’s tourism products and its offerings.
LTA Spokesperson, Mike Tauatsoala said the central thrust was to deliberately reaffirm Limpopo as a home of mega conservation. “The positioning around mega conservation also highlighted the three national parks, Kruger National Park, Mapungubwe National Park and Marakele National Park. This was further reinforced by the transfrontier park status of Greater Maphungubwe Transfrontier Park,” Tauatsoala said.
He further stated: “We also showcased the Government owned game reserves as well as private sector led game reserves spread throughout the province which reinforce Limpopo as a leading destination in South Africa. We believe 2017 will be a good year to reclaim our status as the leading conserved region in South Africa. For Limpopo destinations, mega conservation is the main driver of spend and tourism arrivals for both domestic and international markets.”
As part of the 2017 repositioning, LTA and its partners reportedly created a Limpopo Pavilion where all products were housed in one floor spaces.
“In partnership with the tourism industry we hosted three pre-Indaba tours, a group of eight journalists from New York, a group of over 40 journalists from various African countries and a group of hosted buyers who will be touring various tourism attractions in the province,” Tauatsoala concluded.
