Suspected poacher killed during alleged confrontation with park rangers

The incident occurred at Maritenga Block under Punda Malia in the Kruger National Park.

LIMPOPO – A 48-year-old suspected poacher  was shot and killed during an alleged shoot out with Kruger National Park rangers on Sunday, says the police.

According to a statement issued by Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the incident occurred at Maritenga Block under Punda Malia in the Kruger National Park.

It is alleged the deceased was shot and killed by rangers after they spotted the deceased and three other suspected rhino poachers in the park, he said.

“They are alleged to have confronted the suspects whereby the suspects ultimately started shooting, the rangers retaliated and fatally shot the deceased. The remaining three suspects escaped into the surrounding bushes.

Two rifles with ammunition, knives, axes, four bags containing pangas and bottles of water were recovered on the scene.

The Police in Saselamani outside Giyani launched a search for the remaining three suspects.

Police investigations into the death of the deceased continues.
