Rhino poaching syndicate intercepted in Makhado

One suspect, a 40-year-old man, was shot and wounded and the other arrested.

LIMPOPO – Police in Makhado intercepted a rhino poaching syndicate during an operation at the Ekland Game Farm on Monday, 1 May.

Police spokesperson Lt Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe says late on Monday afternoon, two suspected rhino poachers entered the farm where they found the police already waiting for them.

This, after police received information about the suspects’ intended activities of rhino poaching and a shoot out ensued between the police and the poachers.

“One suspect (40) was shot and wounded and the second suspect was arrested. None of the police officers were injured,” Ngoepe said.

Two cases of rhino poaching and attempted murder were opened against the two suspects and police investigations continue.

Ngoepe says during the operation, the following items were recovered:

– One hunting rifle.

– 10 rounds of ammunition.

– Three hunting knives.

“The suspects will appear before the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court soon,” Ngoepe concluded.
