What it takes to be Marketing Manager

Savannah Mall's Amy Goosen opens up about her job and how she deals with the challenges

POLOKWANE – Amy started the new year with a new job description as the Marketing Manager of Savannah Mall, at the beginning of February.

Some of her duties include the marketing of the mall and cinema, as well as dealing with both tenant and customer requests and issues.

“I love being able to change a customer’s opinion of the mall. Sometimes a customer will call with a problem and expect me to have a difficult time resolving it. I love hearing the change in their voice when I make it easy and find a solution,” she explains.

She describes herself as someone who is honest, caring, hardworking, and ambitious.

“I have a great sense of humour. I am an easygoing person and don’t get easily disturbed by the ‘down’s’ in my life. I am spiritual person who adores animals.”

The tenants in the mall agree wholeheartedly with these sentiments.

Security Manager, Wally Oosthuizen, told Review that Amy is a person with a sparkling personality, who will go out of her way to do what you ask and does her work with pride and dedication.

“She also has a heart of gold and a great sense of humour and you can count on the fact that if you play a joke on her, it will come right back to you,” he said.

Amy admits she secretly binge-watches Keeping up with the Kardashians and The Bachelor.

“It is my secret pastime, don’t judge,” she smiles.

When asked what she thinks the golden rule is that she lives by, she quickly explains that she has a lot more than just one rule in life.

“I am going to break my rules here and give you my three golden rules to success. Make decisions as though your life depends on it. When you can’t control the circumstances, don’t let the circumstances control you. Redefine accountability in everything that you do,” she said.

Amy says if she had to give advice to someone thinking of going into marketing, it would be that effective marketing isn’t about looking up the answer.

“It’s about creating the answer. For example, social media wasn’t taught in a classroom until recently, yet it’s been around for years.

“Nobody taught professional marketers already in the business how to “do social media”; they had to figure it out on their own,”she explained.

When she is not hard at work at the mall she loves travelling, watching movies, going out for dinner with friends, and having great intellectual conversations.

Her goals in a few years are not only to succeed in the workplace, but also to start expanding her family. Her love for pets has led on more than one occasion to her adopting way too many animals.

She loves being a marketing manager, but her dream job is something totally different.

“My dream job would be picking coconuts from the trees in Bora Bora on the French Polynesian islands, obviously surrounded by plenty of shelter animals,” she explained.
