Malaria cases treated in Polokwane hospital

Two persons diagnosed with malaria were admitted for treatment to the Limpopo MediClinic in Polokwane last week.

POLOKWANE – According to Ishta McMillan, Client Services Manager at the hospital, one of the patients had already been discharged by Tuesday, but the other patient was still receiving treatment.

Available information indicates that the two persons, a man and a youth, were part of a group of persons who recently visited a farm in the Waterpoort area, near Louis Trichardt.

According to an expert on malaria, the peak time for malaria to be contracted in the province is late March, up to the first week in April. Around 43 cases of malaria were diagnosed in the Waterberg area of Lephalale, Thabazimbi, Bela-Bela and Tom Burke in March, an area where malaria is not usually known to be found. It was assumed that the mosquitoes were brought into the area in the luggage of people originating from malaria-infested areas and countries.
According to the expert, malaria occurs in the area north-east of Louis Trichardt and there is a small risk of contracting malaria in the Waterpoort area.
