Stadium left neglected for too long: villagers

The condition of the Tshifulanani Stadium, situated outside Thohoyandou, has left residents worried and concerned as nothing is seemingly being done by the local municipality to maintain the stadium, which was once the pride of the Vhembe people.

LIMPOPO – Tshifulanani Stadium is situated at the centre of Lwamondo community and used to host Black Leopards matches years ago.

The uncompleted swimming pool inside the stadium has since left parents worried as they know that their young children play at the stadium after school as the broken fence gives them free access.

The stadium toilets are also broken, causing an unbearable smell, which has since left residents concerned and worried.

Residents further complain that the stadium has not been cleaned or maintained since Black Leopards stopped playing matches at the venue.

“The unfinished swimming pool inside the stadium is like a time bomb waiting to explode, kids play inside the stadium almost daily and if something is not done urgently to fix the stadium our kids are not safe as they might drown inside the dirty, neglected swimming pool”, said Vhutshilo Makananise, a local resident.

The stadium is currently being used to host ABC Motsepe League games involving local soccer teams.

“The fence of the stadium is also broken and nothing is being done to fix it. This stadium is owned by the municipality and they should be the ones to see that everything is in order inside the stadium. The toilets are also broken and the smell which comes from those toilets is unbearable,” he said.

“As you can see the stadium had been left neglected and there is nothing we can do as we do not have money which we can use to maintain it,” added Makananise.

Thulamela Municipality Spokesperson Nndwamato Tshila promised to investigate the matter.
