Reserving the right to teach and protect

Ngoako Lawrence Rakopa (54) is a man who has a passion for helping his community.

This passion is clear in his career choice as a teacher and his volunteer work as a police reservist.

This husband and father of two has been a police reservist since 2002.

“I felt compelled to volunteer as a police reservist because I am passionate about fighting crime and protecting those around me. This goes hand in hand with my passion of enriching young minds as a teacher and laying a strong foundation for the youth to play a valuable role in society. What I love most about working with the police is their professionalism and the opportunity the keep my community safe,” he said.

Some of the challenges he has encountered during his time as a reservist is facing criminals who are reluctant and refuse to calm down when caught.

“The training I underwent before becoming a police reservist enables me to handle such situations. I also have peace of mind that I am safe in such situations because we work in teams so backup is always guaranteed in case they are armed.”

He said he feels confident in his abilities and role in society as a police reservist, however, some of his concerns include the corrupt few within the police force poisoning the cart for the rest of the force.

“I encourage everyone to lend a helping hand to the police to help keep our community safe. Not necessarily as a reservist but just by doing your part and informing the police of any criminal or suspicious activity you see or know of. Together we can make a difference and make Limpopo and South Africa as a whole safe for all,” he concluded.
