Physio, fashion forward and full of life

Nicolus sets a precedent for professionals one sleek suit at a time

POLOKWANE – Nicolus Motau (41), a qualified physiotherapist, takes as much pride in his appearance as he does in his work.

“Whether I’m at work, or in public, I feel I must always look the part and be presentable as an individual,” he says.

Nicolus married Mapula in 2003 and they have four children, and he has a child from a previous relationship. He says he always manages to spend time with his children, taking them on holidays, and at weekends he takes his sons to the movies or to soccer matches, while Mapula takes their daughter shopping.

“I support and love all my children equally and unconditionally,” he adds.

He attended primary and high school in Sekgosese village, and studied physiotherapy at the Medical University of South Africa (Medunsa) now the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, in 1995.

He also runs a successful spa, the Rejuvenate Health and Beauty Clinic at the Limpopo Medical Centre.

“As I grew up, I loved playing, and being active, in sports. I watched soccer on TV and used to notice the first aid people who would always run to attend to the injured players on the field. I always wished I could do their job, and envied them because I love helping people, that is why I ended up in this field, it’s in my blood,” he said.

Nicolus tells BONUS his parents have always been, and are, very supportive of his career. “Being in the physio field, it is often challenging to work with different individuals, but at the end of the day it is what brings me joy. Helping patients, bringing them to their feet, making sure their limbs operate properly, especially the individuals that were involved in accidents, and helping them to regain their limb movements, brings me joy. I’m not thinking of changing careers any time soon,” he adds.

Nicolus is currently studying an online Doctoral degree in physical therapy from the North Eastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.

“I am also an Evangelist, spreading the Gospel of Jesus to the communities in and around Limpopo.”

He says he understands that he works with different individuals whom he respects under all circumstances. He treats them with care and does not disclose their personal medical information. He also believes that there must be a bond of trust between him and his patients which he creates through respect and care.

“What makes me unique as a physiotherapist is that I work with many specialists, and when I assess a patient, I always get their opinions concerning a patient, I do not just conclude results with the patient, without first hearing the specialist’s opinions.”

He describes himself as a very humble person, but also a perfectionist.

“My purpose in life generally, and within my career, is to make a difference in someone’s life in one way or another, be it spiritually, psychologically or physically,” he concluded.
