Are you being followed? What to do

Self-defense instructor Daan du Toit spoke to Review on ways people can verify whether they are being followed, and what to do if they indeed are being watched.

POLOKWANE – Often in cases of mugging or robbery, the victims have been watched by the perpetrators for a length of time.

This is according to self-defense instructor Daan du Toit. He spoke to Review on ways people can verify whether they are being followed, and what to do if they indeed are being watched.

He said one of the main things people need to realise is that being followed is something that happens to all kinds of people, any time of the day or night.

“Many people think that being followed is something that happens in the movies or to movie stars but the fact is that people are falling victim to being followed daily and then find themselves in dangerous situations ,” Du Toit said.

His number one tip is to be aware of your surroundings.

“If you know the place you are going, you will be much more relaxed and this may make you an easier target. Always be aware of your surroundings,” he said.

When you believe that people are following you, do not make it obvious that you are aware of them as this can sometimes lead to an attack. “Use windows, mirrors and other reflecting items to keep an eye on the people following you. Also walk in a zig zag pattern, changing direction suddenly to make sure that you are really being followed,” he said.

When you believe that you are being followed, walk in different directions, if someone is taking the same route then you are being followed.

He said that asking for assistance at shops or houses and calling the police are some of the best ways to ensure your safety.

“Criminals do not want eyes on them so the sooner you can get other people’s attention on them, the better,” Du Toit concluded.
