Law enforcement will be out in full force this Easter weekend – SAPS commissioner
The Office of the Provincial Police Commissioner has issued a statement regarding operations to be undertaken by the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies over the coming Easter weekend.
POLOKWANE – It reads as follows: As part of our strategic focus during this time of the year, the South African Police Service and other law enforcement agencies will be out in full force to ensure that all visitors and people living in this province are and feel safe. We have already started actioning our operational plans that were designed to tackle all potential criminal activities at identified areas.
The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has urged all motorists and visitors to the province to work with the relevant forces such as the police and traffic officials to ensure the safety of all road users.
“The Easter holidays are often characterised by multitudes of people, either visiting or passing through the province en route to neighbouring countries. The police will therefore work tirelessly to ensure the safety of all, not only on the roads with our partners, but also within the city, towns and rural communities of the province to ensure a crime free Easter period, ” Lt. Gen. Ledwaba said.
“Millions of people will be visiting this province for various pilgrimages including both ZCC churches, tourists and people visiting their families. We therefore want to ensure that they enjoy and experience the beauty and vibrancy of our province in a crime free environment,” he continued.
Police visibility will be increased all over the province with members conducting road blocks as well as vehicle and foot patrols.
“We are aware that during this period, criminal elements take advantage of the holiday situation and start breaking in and stealing from those who are away from their respective homes. The criminal elements take advantage of those who are travelling from one destination to the other. They often subject those who are looking for lifts to various criminal exposure, for example rape, robbery, hijacking and other related experiences,” he said.
The Provincial Commissioner said high density operations in the main routes as well as at shopping malls will be intensified during the Easter.
The following can go a long way in assisting the police:
- Do not drink and drive
- Do not hitch-hike
- Do not leave valuables in your vehicle exposed
- Do not accept drinks or food from strangers
- Do not leave your vehicle unlocked
- Report any suspicious looking strangers near your house
- Do not open your door for strangers
