SAMA council elected

The newly elected leadership of the South African Medical Association (Sama) council in the province will soon convene an imbizo, inviting all doctors in the province to attend.

POLOKWANE – The imbizo’s aim will be to reflect on progress made so far with issues mentioned in a memorandum of understanding handed over to the Department of Health a year ago, seeking a better working environment, functional equipment and addressing other issues to better the working environment of medical practitioners in the province.

“The new council comprises Drrs Sizeka Maweya (Chairperson), Khanani Perseverence Mathonsi (Deputy Chairperson), myself as Secretary, and Nkateko Gavaza Mnisi (Treasurer),” Dr Seshoka Laudwick Muila told Review.

“The private sector will be represented by Drrs Nkateko Masinge and Lesibane Ledwaba, while Drrs Felix Masinge will represent trade unions, with his deputy Lufono Rambuwani. Daniel Seakga will be our projects officer. There are also representatives co-opted from the districts.”

According to Muila the province had the highest voter turnout countrywide in the election process which took place between 24 February and 13 March.

He voiced his sincere appreciation for all those who partook in the election process and said this showed Limpopo is the most conscious and active province as far as the struggle for quality healthcare and better working conditions is concerned.

Muila said the imbizo will serve as a platform where the newly elected leadership will get a mandate as they continue the struggle for a better working environment.

The medical practitioners took to the streets last year and threatened a strike action or refusal to work overtime should there not be adhered to some of their demands.

The department engaged in talks with medical practitioners and hospital management across the province and started to address some of the issues raised.
