Traffic officers to come down hard on reckless drivers this Easter

The MEC for Transport, Nandi Ndalane, said law enforcers will apply a zero tolerance approach to road rule perpetrators.

LIMPOPO – In light of heavy congestion expected on Limpopo’s roads this coming Easter weekend, traffic officials in the province have warned that strong action will be taken against motorists who do not adhere to the rules of the road.

Each year, the province sees millions of members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) and its sister church, St Engenas ZCC make their pilgrimage to Moria.

The MEC for Transport, Nandi Ndalane said in a bid to reduce road deaths by 50% over the weekend, law enforcers will apply a zero tolerance approach to road rule perpetrators. “We shall take the most punitive measures against such people. We have the responsibility to enforce the law and we therefore shall do so without any hindrance,” he said.

Ndalane indicated that traffic officers have been urged to take the harshest possible measures against those who break the law.

The department has engaged bus companies which will transport people to Moria and issued instructions aimed at making traffic flow easier.

No bus may travel through the Polokwane city centre. All buses must travel with their headlights on and drivers are reminded to adhere to the maximum speed limit of 80 km/h and buses are not allowed to operate via Mookgophong and Mokopane on the R101, she said.

Ndalane further wished the people of Limpopo a blessed and safe Easter weekend. This year, Easter weekend shall be celebrated under the theme, ‘Together with our communities we should do more to stop these senseless deaths on our roads’.

The Premier Stanley Mathabatha wishes to welcome the millions of pilgrims from all over the world, and especially throughout Africa to their great pilgrimage.

“Our traffic officials, including the community and SAPS officials have been instructed more than ever to make their presence felt on every square inch of our roads and villages,” said Mathabatha.

Health MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba checked the state of readiness for the Easter weekend at Mankweng Hospital.

According to Ramathuba, the hospital is ready with a contingency plan for the Easter weekend.

She is confident that both Evelyn Lekganyane Clinic and Mankweng Hospital will be able to handle casualties.
